Don’t Lose Weight—Seek An Alkaline Body

Don’t ask me how much I weigh because I will never have an answer for you.  I tell people all the time, I do not weigh myself and haven’t for years.  My weight doesn’t fluctuate often and I do not work out (something I am not proud of).  I believe my motivation has more to do with loving all my clothes than anything else (vane, but I do not want to buy new clothes all the time)!!

What  I do recommend is trying to move your body towards a more alkaline state.  A lot of people have no idea what’s the difference between alkaline and acidic foods but if you take the time to educate yourself a little, I’m sure you’re grasp the concept without having to jog your memory all the way back to chemistry class.

When your body is in an alkaline state, you are less likely to suffer from chronic diseases. In an alkaline state you will have better skin, more energy, faster metabolism, optimal digestion, higher sex drive, improved fat loss and the list goes on.  The foods and beverages you consume each day have a direct impact on the acid and alkaline balance in your body. The green smoothie that I drink almost daily is my quick and dirty way of moving towards an alkaline state without having to chew on carrots all day!

Fruits and vegetables make your body more alkaline, while processed foods, sugar, refined carbohydrates and alcohol make you more acidic. By eating alkalizing foods, you are more likely to maintain a healthy weight (explains my lack of fluctuating weight). The frequent consumption of acid-producing foods is more likely to contribute to a weight problem.

This balance is measured by determining your body’s pH value (your body’s fluids and tissues) which determines if you are more acidic or alkaline. On a pH scale of negative 4.5, which is very acidic, to positive 9.5, which is highly alkaline, your body is considered healthy and alkaline if you have a pH level of 7.0 or above.

The average American Western diet is quite acidic.  My parent’s Caribbean upbringing, although modest on many levels, provided them to eat close to the ground, therefore naturally having a more alkaline body.  When Usain Bolt’s father explained his son’s speed with the local white yams—BELIEVE HIM!  I’m thinking of ways right now to start my own vegetable garden and I know the benefits will be long-term for me and my family.

Other benefits of an alkaline body—cancer prevention and fewer colds.  And let me add, I am not on the perfect diet—NO WAY.  I consider myself a foodie and love to eat, but I think an alkaline focus has helped to counter those bad eating habits.

“Build it and they will come”, well in that same spirit — seek an alkaline body and the weight loss will come.

Bikram Yoga – Living Dangerously?

My friends, if you like to live on the dangerous side, I encourage you to try bikram yoga.  I tried it for the first time years ago and trust me,  there is a reason why I didnt go back!  If you are going to try it, make sure and drink plenty of fluids before class.  Treat yourself to a good mask afterwards and enjoy the benefits of a quick facial!

Sunscreen for the Non-Sunscreen Wearer

I have to admit, I have never been a sunscreen person.  I love the sun and because of my dark skin, I think  the sun is the least of my worries.  Boy, was I wrong.  Having children, hormonal issues, and being in the sun without sunscreen all contributed to my pigmentation issues.  My dermatologist said I MUST wear sunscreen and recommended this product EltaMD UV Clear 46 because I refused to wear a heavy  and oily SPF sunscreen.

I think I may have finally found a sunscreen that meets all of my requirements!  First off, the best thing about this product and the company, EltaMD, is that they are PETA approved which means they are 100% cruelty free. Amazingly this product is vegan, as well as good!

Besides being animal friendly, this sunscreen is the best sunscreen and moisturizer that I have ever used! It’s consistency is light and it soaks into the skin. An added bonus is that the niacinamide in this product not only helps calm acne prone skin. but it helps with aging, as well. This product is awesome for those of us that have adult acne and are looking for something that won’t break us out, dry us out and will have anti-aging benefits.I am SO sick of companies thinking that if you are looking for an oil free non pore clogging product that they have to put salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide in them, which ultimately makes the acne worse and dries up your skin. Luckily EltaMD has made this perfect product not loaded with chemicals and skin drying ingredients!

So far, I have been very pleased with the product and plan to use this year-round.  This is the perfect time of the year to test out new SPF products.  What are you using for sunscreen?

“Thank You God for a Healthy Body, Namaste”

“Thank You God for a Healthy Body, Namaste” – words spoken from my four-year old son when mimicking his yoga sessions at his pre-school.  Although I practiced yoga for many years, I do not consider myself a yogi or health nut.  I do understand the concept of moving your body towards a more alkaline state and all the goodness that comes with it.

Years ago, I was introduced to Kimberly Snyder (nutritionist) by way of one of my favorite blogs, Mischo Beauty.  The stress of Capitol Hill and family caused regular tummy aches so I decided to have a consultation with Kimberly about 3 years ago.  This consultation really changed my life and my perspective on food.  I now drink a Green Smoothie at least 4-5 times a week and take a probiotic, enzyme, and multi-vitamin daily.

The Green Smoothie is like a daily detox for your body and aids in the effort of moving your body to a more alkaline state.  A more alkaline body brings clearer skin, healthier hair, and a faster metabolism.  It also provides me with a good daily supply of fruit and vegetables and it is also pretty yummy.  With this on my side, regular works out are not necessary.  An occasional beach body or yoga class works for me.  I will also talk about regular sauna sessions and bikram yoga at a later time.

You can alter the Green Smoothie according to taste, but the idea is that you should substitute a green for a green.  For example, don’t replace spinach for a strawberry….but kale instead of spinach is just fine.    You can find more information about Kimberly and the Green Smoothie here.

Real Beauty

I love this picture of one of the Olsen twins. Her hair, make-up, dewy look….but I think what I appreciate most of all is that the photo is not airbrushed. You can see a blemish here and there, but she clearly comes across as stunning. #realexpectations

NARS New Tinted Moisturizer

I do not wear a lot of make-up, but I like how a little make-up can clean up your look.  I don’t have lots of time in my morning routine (infant, toddler, and full-time job), but a good tinted moisturizer always does the trick!

NARS has recently introduced its Pure Radiance Tinted Moisturizer for spring 2012 in nine shades suitable for all ranges of brown girls.  The product is enriched with Vitamin C (brighten dark spots), and antioxidants from the Oceana saffron plant. An added bonus is the SPF30! I normally wear NW45 in MAC and am currently testing out the Martinique and Polynesia shades.  After all these years, I still haven’t found one that adequately replaced my MAC Select Tint. #crossingfingers
