Eden Event in DC

Eden Style Event #stylewitheden

Last week I had a well needed break from the family and went out to an Eden Style event in DC with some sorority sisters. I had tons of fun and learned some things about health and beauty. I also got to debut my new favorite piece –the J.crew Scalloped Linen jacket. Love this little thing…

J.Crew June Preview

Just in time for Memorial Day Weekend–we get a sneak peak at the June Preview from Jcrew.  Some of my favorites:

  • Beaded Sweater, 51465, $138  - Described as a linen stripe sweater with rows of delicate glass and metallic bugle beads.

  • Pleated Chiffon Dress, 46157, $250- Described as Make summer dressing a breeze with a toss-on-and-go dress. The flattering folds and sleek high neckline with a keyhole opening makes this ultra-feminine, swishy silhouette go from day to night in a snap.

  • Arm candy. Wrist bliss. Call them what you will—our bracelets are a quick and stylish way to transform any dull outfit into a gem!

The Minnie – My Namesake…

Last week I dropped my son off at the bus stop and when I hopped back in the car to drop off baby girl to the sitter, I had a very nice text from one of the mom’s at the bus stop (who is a buddy of mine).  She was asking about the pants I had on and where I had gotten them.  I was happy to text back “They are Jcrew Minnies”, and even happier to share that I had them since my first son was about 2 years old.

And although I am ecstatic to be able to say that they still fit after a second baby, I tend to brag more about the quality and how it has managed to still look good.  I mean, I’m not exagerating when I say they are in very good condition.  Considering they are black and have experienced no fading whatsoever…look just as black since the first day I purchased them.  The stretch is still as perfect as Day One.  In fact, my buddy at the bus stop said she liked the fit on me, and it really is the genius of Jcrew because there is just the right amount of stretch in them where it looks comfy and not too tight.

Of course, since then, I have added more colors of the Minnies to my collection, but all of them tend to be show stoppers.  Here are my top three picks:

Minnie Favorites

  1. You definitely need the Classic black–this can be dressed down or up and is the perfect first purchase into the Minnie family.
  2. Some of you here remember these–I wear them for all kinds of occasions.  I really believe you need at least one Minnie that will serve as your pop of color.  I have dressed these up with a peach silk button-up top and leopard heels, and easily dressed down with a summer tank and sandals.
  3. And finally, Chloe from the Chloe Conspiracy wearing a favorite of mine–the wool Minnie.  I love how she pears it with the pop of mint.  Don’t let the wool fool you, you can wear these just about throughout the year, with the exception of the summer, of course.

Well ladies, do you own a pair or are ready to make that purchase?

Until next time..

Ladies Who Lunch with Latisha Daring @ the Tribeca Grill Loft in NYC

NYC Panelists from left: Laurie Angela Cumbo, Nanci Neffi Walker, Julee Wilson, Tai Beauchamp, Carline Balan, Tanasha Pettigrew (dream hampton not photographed)

Last Sunday, I had the opportunity to attend an inspiring luncheon at the famed Tribeca Grill Loft in NYC.  The ‘Ladies Who Lunch’ event hosted by Latisha Daring, left me feeling empowered.  I knew I would leave feeling inspired, it was themed “Unlimited Possibilities”, but have no idea it would have me dusting off my old application to Harvard!  (Harvard here I come, Fall 2014!)  Latisha Daring, the successful New York-based fashion designer behind Ashtyn, whom I have posted about in the past, is the brainchild behind the luncheon series.  Her newest project, Ladies Who Lunch with Latisha Daring (www.theladieswholunch.org is a call for women to follow their destiny of fabulousness in fearless fashion!

While I enjoy being in a room with stylish women, I am more impressed when they are SMART, stylish women!  And that was just the premise of this event, intended as an empowerment lunch series geared towards women entrepreneurs who aspire to impact their communities and the world at-large, this audience was filled with beautiful, ambitious ladies.    The luncheon series kicked off on March 17th in NYC and the next stop is Washington, DC in late April.  I am excited to share that I will be partnering with Latisha to bring Ladies Who Lunch to DC–in the meantime, check out the fab names who lined up the NYC panelists:

  • Tai Beauchamp, style expert on “The Today Show”, “Good Day New York” and appearances on BET, CNN, TV One and more.
  • dream hampton, writer, hip hop journalist
  • Laurie Angela Cumbo, city council candidate and founder of MOCADA Museum
  • Julee Wilson, Style & Beauty Editor at The Huffington Post BlackVoices
  • Tanasha Pettigrew, luxury real estate expert

And the Summer Just Got Hotter! NEW Beyoncé Collaboration with H&M!!

Beyonce for H&M

Just when we thought the summer was going to be sizzling hot because of Beyoncé’s highly anticipated  (and sold out) “Mrs Carter Show” tour–we get news of this new collaboration with Beyoncé & H&M!  Beyoncé will be the face of H&M’s summer campaign and will be wearing pieces from the H&M summer collection inspired by her style.

Beyoncé worked with the in-house design team at H&M to create the perfect pieces for the heat of summer. Included in the collection are also garments – among them a tie-dye bikini –I personally want this!  And just when you thought you couldn’t adore Beyoncé any more (didnt we love that HBO special!), she collaborates with an affordable store that we all love and 25 percent of sales of will be donated to H&M for Water. H&M’s initiative with WaterAid has so far raised millions since 2002 and because I believe clean water should be a human right, I’m just about ready to join the Bey Hive because of my excitement.

I’m out my friends! tm2

All About the Collar

If you subscribe to Jcrew emails, you received one today from Gayle, who is Jcrew’s Fashion Director and sends out emails with regular style tips. She has taken over this duty while our friend Jenna Lyons has taken a backseat to a lot of media…possibly related to her new relationship perhaps?
Anyhoo, it’s always nice to see when your style is in tandem with what the professionals recommend and that’s just what happened to me today! Just yesterday I wore a $5 vintage necklace over the same Jcrew top! Gayle even recommended trying a scarf around the collar, which I plan to do with a scarf from my mother’s closet circa 1970s. I’m totally feeling retro these days and this style of dressing up the collar coincides with that. It really does take a look from blah to yah!

Try it when you can!

NYC Event – Freshwater Pop-Up Shop – Greenhouse 10/11/12

As much as I love shopping at Jcrew, I love it more when I can shop for a good cause and it benefit Haiti (my parent’s origin).  I have teamed up with the producers of the Freshwater Pop-Up Shop to create a dynamic shopping (fashion & beauty)  and social experience at NYC’s one and only, Greenhouse on Thursday, October 11th.  All of the proceeds will bring fresh water supplies to a village in Haiti on the small island of La Gonave.  I have been helping the organization, Roots of Development, for many years in the Washington, DC area and am happy to assist in their first fundraiser in my hometown of NYC.  I was able to recruit a few of my friends to assist – thanks to Latisha Daring the fab designer of Ashtyn, LLC for agreeing to be an Ambassador at the event.  The event will be hosted by the beautiful, Jessica White, model and philanthropist.  If you are in the area, please stop by and support the cause.

You can purchase tickets here.

Post Event – What I Wore & How I Prepared!

20120928-195338.jpg

So the event is finally over…Thank you all for supporting the Healthy Hair Affair DC!  You can read about it here with Cipriana of UrbanBushBabes and here with Ms. Tamara Rasberry!

And just like I anticipated, my friend, Latisha Daring of Ashtyn Clothing, put me in an outfit that really left me no room to hide anything! So glad that I was on my Green Smoothie kick all week! If you want to continue the detox past breakfast, change up your diet for lunch & dinner:

Lunch – Try to keep it vegan. A salad tossed with your favorite sides Or soup Or even an avocado.

Dinner – Introduce protein (chicken or fish) again — but make sure to pair it with veggies. If you prefer some carbs (rice, cous cous, etc) that evening, skip the protein and add veggies. The idea is to limit your protein & carb combinations–which makes it harder for your body to break down.

I received tons of compliments at the event–and most people were surprised to learn that I do not really work out–but I am convinced that my body is treating me right because I am giving it the right nutrients.

Stay Prepared, tm2.

Prepping the Body for a Big Event – Detox Style

Beyonce

Next week I will be producing and hosting an event during the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference. My good friend, Latisha Daring, a NYC stylist I’ve known from my Bklyn days and owner of the new clothing line Ashtyn) will be dressing me the day of the event in one of her figure-flattering Ashtyn pieces. Check her out here during Harlem Fashion Row and Essence.com feature here.

Despite having a stellar stylist on duty, I still want to look in tiptop shape because she hasn’t dressed me since having the two honey don’ts and I want to make sure I represent her pieces well. To prepare, I will be following a healthy “vegetarian til dinner” diet. This regimen will not only have my body in optimum shape but the increased green intake will move me towards a more alkaline body…which also results in glowing skin—in this case, a nice side effect before an event.

I will be posting my routine over the next few days. Today I will begin with what I call “breakfast”. Check back in a couple of days to see lunch and dinner.

My routine will include the following:

Breakfast

8am – Lemon Tea – half lemon squeezed in warm water. This helps retract the belly pouch. If you ever have a big event to attend, drink lots of it. I usually drink 2 cups with probiotic(promotes good belly bacteria).

10-11am – Depending on how my morning is going, I usually don’t actually get to my Glowing Green Smoothie until about 10am, sometimes even closer to 11am. Some people can’t imagine not having a breakfast until 10 or 11 but this is actually a good thing for your body. It’s like you are extending the overnight detox process that you partake in while you sleep.

An empty stomach (drink lots of water in between your lemon tea and green smoothie), is actually the optimum time to drink the green smoothie. The nutrients will go directly where it needs to without being backed up by bad heavy breakfast food (pancakes, eggs, bacon, etc.)—which is quite popular in a traditional Western diet. If you travel to more tropical settings, you would find their breakfast more inline with a fruit or green smoothie. If you are still hungry after your green smoothie, grab some toast and better or a fruit. Overtime, you will be drinking 12-16oz of the Green Smoothie, and that will satisfy your needs until lunch.

**If you do not have time to make a Green Smoothie, grab some fruit instead.

Stay Fit, tm2

Jcrew Spotlight – What I’m Craving

Collection Italian wool dress

This wool collection piece left as fast as it came.  It is completely sold out now (hasn’t been online that long), and I can understand why.  For just under $300, you can have this tailored, classic wool dress that can remain relevant in your closet for years to come.  The color, the price, the cut…all had me at hello.  It is a statement dress in such a subtle way.  Unfortunately for me, they are sold out.  Oh well, maybe a pop-back in the near future? This may be a job for Mickey, my hero! I have to check with the mothership (a la Gigi) to find out the deets on this one!

Until next time my friends,

Stay Shopping, tm2!

UPDATE:  Well, Mickey and his team have done it again!  Dress located and shipped! #teamjcrew all day
