J.Crew June Preview

Just in time for Memorial Day Weekend–we get a sneak peak at the June Preview from Jcrew.  Some of my favorites:

  • Beaded Sweater, 51465, $138  - Described as a linen stripe sweater with rows of delicate glass and metallic bugle beads.

  • Pleated Chiffon Dress, 46157, $250- Described as Make summer dressing a breeze with a toss-on-and-go dress. The flattering folds and sleek high neckline with a keyhole opening makes this ultra-feminine, swishy silhouette go from day to night in a snap.

  • Arm candy. Wrist bliss. Call them what you will—our bracelets are a quick and stylish way to transform any dull outfit into a gem!

The Minnie – My Namesake…

Last week I dropped my son off at the bus stop and when I hopped back in the car to drop off baby girl to the sitter, I had a very nice text from one of the mom’s at the bus stop (who is a buddy of mine).  She was asking about the pants I had on and where I had gotten them.  I was happy to text back “They are Jcrew Minnies”, and even happier to share that I had them since my first son was about 2 years old.

And although I am ecstatic to be able to say that they still fit after a second baby, I tend to brag more about the quality and how it has managed to still look good.  I mean, I’m not exagerating when I say they are in very good condition.  Considering they are black and have experienced no fading whatsoever…look just as black since the first day I purchased them.  The stretch is still as perfect as Day One.  In fact, my buddy at the bus stop said she liked the fit on me, and it really is the genius of Jcrew because there is just the right amount of stretch in them where it looks comfy and not too tight.

Of course, since then, I have added more colors of the Minnies to my collection, but all of them tend to be show stoppers.  Here are my top three picks:

Minnie Favorites

  1. You definitely need the Classic black–this can be dressed down or up and is the perfect first purchase into the Minnie family.
  2. Some of you here remember these–I wear them for all kinds of occasions.  I really believe you need at least one Minnie that will serve as your pop of color.  I have dressed these up with a peach silk button-up top and leopard heels, and easily dressed down with a summer tank and sandals.
  3. And finally, Chloe from the Chloe Conspiracy wearing a favorite of mine–the wool Minnie.  I love how she pears it with the pop of mint.  Don’t let the wool fool you, you can wear these just about throughout the year, with the exception of the summer, of course.

Well ladies, do you own a pair or are ready to make that purchase?

Until next time..

Double dose of Citron – Jcrew Tippie Cardigan

Double dose of Citron

It has taken me awhile to get with the Jcrew Tippi sweater, but I think I’m finally on board.  I have been looking for a cardigan that offers more length than the Jackie at Jcrew and the Tippi hasn’t let me down.  I picked up the citron color during the promotional sale a few weeks ago and am happy adding it to my wardrobe during this time of transitional weather.  Even gives me the right amount of color for the season and the weight of the sweater makes it a year-round addition.  I’m feeling bright cardigans this right now, so look out for me rocking the Tippi cardigan in neon azalea this season, as well.

Pillow Options for the Maxwell

Pillow Options for the Maxwell

I have a terrible time choosing settling on pillows for my home.  There are so many different options, depending on the feeling you’re going for, to choose from…transitional, traditional, fun & flirty, etc.  I would like to call my style transitional–love a little from the present and the past.  I have been playing with pillow ideas for my Maxwell Leather sofa from Restoration hardware, and I have gone on and on for months trying to narrow it down.  I think I should just turn into one of those people who change their pillows at least once every season.  At least that way I could test out all these great design ideas.  The nice thing about most of these pillows (there’s just one from target.com) is that they are from etsy.com. I love to go to etsy for pillows–homemade pieces that most people do not have!  I haven’t settled on one look yet–hoping to get some input–what do you think??  #1, 2, 3, or 4??

Iphone Button Trinkets

Iphone Button Trinkets
One of the best things about being a girl is having our fair share of accessories.  The other day while ‘bay browsing on ebay I came across these cute iPhone button covers out of China.  They are just the cutest things and are all reasonably priced – on average they are about $2!!  I couldn’t help myself, so not only did I buy a few for myself, but I starting buying them as little gifts for my girlfriends. I love being able to give a girlfriend a cute girly gift such as this–and it really doesn’t cost much.  The colors are vibrant and the quality is excellent–I will have to admit I was concerned about the quality coming out of China.  I featured some of my favorite button covers, but they really have a large variety on ebay.  Just put in “iphone button covers” in the search and tons of listings will come up.  Here are two of my favorite ebay sellers for iPhone buttons:

IKEA Ektorp Review

IKEA Ektorp

I will have to admit, my designer friend Tashica Morgan (and the countless number of blogs I follow) has  made me a reformed Ikea fan.  I remember in 2000, I had this idea to get an entire bedroom from Ikea–dresser, side tables, etc.  I still have the side table (now painted blue and in my son’s bedroom), but the dresser didnt make it.  Let’s just say, it fell a part.  Fast forward to 2013–my family room sectional couch is from Ikea, including a countless number of other gadgets in the house.

I have the Ektorp 2 + 2 sectional in the Vellinge Dark Blue color.  It’s a nice blue/velvety combination that has been kid-tested.  We’ve had it for almost 6 months and I must say, I am impressed.  My 5 year old has vomited on this bad boy–the little girl has dropped everything you can imagine on it–but it’s still looking good!  My son likes to fly across the different sides of the sectional and there hasn’t been an issue yet.  It’s comfortable enough to sleep on because everyone in the family has had their share of naps on this sectional.  We love it!  And since we live about 15 minutes from our nearest Ikea, gives us all the more reason to shop there!

Enjoy the rest of the week! tm2

Last Sunday, I had the opportunity to attend an inspiring luncheon at the famed Tribeca Grill Loft in NYC.  The ‘Ladies Who Lunch’ event hosted by Latisha Daring, left me feeling empowered.  I knew I would leave feeling inspired, it was themed “Unlimited Possibilities”, but have no idea it would have me dusting off my old application to Harvard!  (Harvard here I come, Fall 2014!)  Latisha Daring, the successful New York-based fashion designer behind Ashtyn, whom I have posted about in the past, is the brainchild behind the luncheon series.  Her newest project, Ladies Who Lunch with Latisha Daring (www.theladieswholunch.org is a call for women to follow their destiny of fabulousness in fearless fashion!

My To-Buy Kitchen List

Kitchen List

Just a few more things to pick up for the kitchen before it’s complete!  (Who am I fooling–it will never be complete)  I have already picked up a few of them, but here’s my seven:
1.  A colorful rug that is will also serve as a pop of color.  This wasnt too expensive-half price at Joss and Main.
2.  The perfect pendant to place over the counter–I have about 7 different pendants on my list but I feel like this one (or at least style) may be the one.
3.  I love a wood cutting board–especially against my grey and white countertops.
4.  My new year’s resolution–or at least my pledge to the new house –is to bring more green inside. The pot is the perfect shape for me and my new affection towards plants!
5.  I picked these up at my local Anthropologie the other day, love the colors and I can pair them with a solid napkin to balance it all out.
6.  This vintage brass lotus bowl is a stunner–I love all my brass accessories in the house and in my wardrobe!  I have a ton of brassy looking Jcrew accessories and this goes hand in hand with my style.
7.  And finally some wall art on the bluish/grey Benjamin Moore stonington grey walls!
Thinking about some new counter stools–but I’m trying to pace myself–the silver ones from crate n barrel will do just fine for now.
What new things are you picking up for your kitchen?

And the Summer Just Got Hotter! NEW Beyoncé Collaboration with H&M!!

Beyonce for H&M

Just when we thought the summer was going to be sizzling hot because of Beyoncé’s highly anticipated  (and sold out) “Mrs Carter Show” tour–we get news of this new collaboration with Beyoncé & H&M!  Beyoncé will be the face of H&M’s summer campaign and will be wearing pieces from the H&M summer collection inspired by her style.

Beyoncé worked with the in-house design team at H&M to create the perfect pieces for the heat of summer. Included in the collection are also garments – among them a tie-dye bikini –I personally want this!  And just when you thought you couldn’t adore Beyoncé any more (didnt we love that HBO special!), she collaborates with an affordable store that we all love and 25 percent of sales of will be donated to H&M for Water. H&M’s initiative with WaterAid has so far raised millions since 2002 and because I believe clean water should be a human right, I’m just about ready to join the Bey Hive because of my excitement.

I’m out my friends! tm2

SpeedCooking Playdates

Food containers-1

As a mother of two under five who works full time outside the home (and decided to move during a school year), I’m all about finding ways to make life less hectic and creating shortcuts to accomplish the greater good.  In the midst of unpacking and decorating, I began to feel guilty about the lack of time I was spending in the kitchen.  And lets admit it folks, after spending your time and money on a minor kitchen renovation—you absolutely feel like it is necessary to spend more time in the kitchen!

In addition to the fact that a home cooked meal is the best way to follow a budget, it is also the best gift you can give your family (good health)!  I preach alkaline body and green smoothie—but when life gets hectic, I have to prioritize and sometimes the family dinner gets the short end of the stick.  So along with a good buddy of mine—we have started doing Speed Cooking Playdates.  I’m sure there are versions of this all over the world, but I am going to go ahead and coin the term now—remember you heard it here first!

First, think about your friends who have kids close to the age of your own.  This was an easy fit for me because Vanessa (my Trinidadian buddy) because our daughters are six months apart— and my 5 year old son quickly assigned himself as the “overseer of toddler activities” so he was out of our way, as well.  With the younger ones, you have to be prepared for the occasional “I just need attention break”.  Both Vanessa and I had our fair share of these the other night—but for the most part, we were at work speed cooking.

I call it speed cooking because you literally, get no breaks.  Anyone who cooks regularly knows that there are always times during cooking when you are waiting on something to be done—this is essentially a break.  Well, with speedcooking just forget about any of those breaks.  You are allotted a break or two for the toddlers (the occasional hug, accompany child away from the kitchen back to family room walk, the occasional sip of liquid (some choose wine here, it’s your chose just be prepared for whatever happens next).   But it’s called speedcooking because it is truly continuous—no breaks, there is always something that needs to be done.  Even when coming down to the end when there’s nothing to cook—but plenty of pots and pans to clean, containers to stuff.

Oh did I mention you are going to freeze a good portion of this?  Yes, you probably want to only leave out a day or two of food.  The rest you place in containers—I would say divide them into portions of one-two days’ worth of food for your family.  Leftovers are always good, but folks get bored with the same dish everyday so this option allows you to keep things “fresh” in more ways than one!  And don’t worry, you don’t need to buy Tupperware, I found that I had more than enough needed for this playdate.  So there, I accomplished my goal—fresh home cooked meals and a playdate for the little one!

Here’s the breakdown:

What you’ll need:

(1)   Plenty of food to cook – this includes lots of fresh prep food that allows you to hold back on the salt.  We used tons of these ingredients in each meal during prep: cilantro, parsley, garlic, ginger, thyme

(2)   Kids and toys (dvds, pots, pans, anything!) – they tend to occupy themselves

(3)   Good spirits (that could include a little wine or beer (great for bbq recipes)  on hand too)

What you’ll get (Results):

(1)   Lots of good, fresh, home cooked meals.  Last night we made stew chicken, bbq chicken jerk chicken, rice & peas, quinoa & dried cranberries, spaghetti (delicious meatsauce!!)

(2)   a happy husband (gets to watch sports all evening with little interruptions), wiped out kids, 1-2 weeks worth of all kinds of food

Stay filled,

tm2
